Port Arthur Tasmania

Port Arthur, Tasmania

What if I told you…
one of Australia’s most beautiful coastal places…
was once one of its most feared?

Port Arthur Tasmania

Welcome to Port Arthur, Tasmania.

From 1830, this remote settlement became one of the most important convict sites in Australia — and eventually held thousands of transported convicts.

But Port Arthur wasn’t simply a prison.

It became an entire settlement…
with workshops, shipbuilding, farms, a hospital, church…
and the enormous Penitentiary that still dominates the ruins today.

And then there was the Separate Prison.

Here, punishment changed from physical force to psychological isolation.
Prisoners were kept apart… identified by numbers… and subjected to strict silence.

Just offshore lies the Isle of the Dead —
the burial place for more than 1,000 people, including convicts and officials.

Today, Port Arthur is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Australian Convict Sites…

but its history also carries a much more recent tragedy.

In 1996, 35 people were killed here in Australia’s deadliest modern mass shooting — an event that profoundly changed the nation and its gun laws.

Today, Port Arthur is a place of history, remembrance… and extraordinary Tasmanian scenery.

More than ruins remain here.

They tell the stories of the people who lived, suffered and died here.
