What if I told you… Tasmania only has three native snake species… and all three are venomous?
The most common is the Tiger Snake — often found near wetlands, grasslands, and coastal areas. It carries powerful neurotoxic venom… but usually avoids people unless cornered or stepped on.
Then there’s the Lowland Copperhead… a species adapted to Tasmania’s colder climate. Unlike many Australian snakes… it can stay active even on cool days.
And the smallest of Tasmania’s native snakes… is the White-lipped Snake. Smaller and more secretive… but still venomous.
Surprisingly… Tasmania has no native pythons or tree snakes at all.
Most snake encounters happen during warmer months… especially while bushwalking, near long grass, or around rocky coastal tracks.
But despite their reputation… Tasmanian snakes usually prefer escape over conflict. Most bites happen when people accidentally disturb them.
That’s why locals follow one simple rule: If you see a snake… give it space.
Because in Tasmania… even the wildlife reminds you… this island is still truly wild.
